Skill 2 – Parts of Speech
In English, words are divided into categories based on their function in a sentence. These categories are called Parts of Speech.- Noun: Names a person, place, thing, or idea (dog, city, love).
- Pronoun: Replaces a noun (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).
- Verb: Shows action or state (run, eat, is, seem).
- Adjective: Describes a noun (happy, tall, blue).
- Adverb: Describes a verb, adjective, or adverb (quickly, very, well).
- Preposition: Shows relationship between words (in, on, at, under, after).
- Conjunction: Connects words or sentences (and, but, because).
- Interjection: Shows emotion (Wow! Oh! Hey!).
Examples:
- Noun: The cat sleeps.
- Pronoun: It sleeps.
- Verb: The cat sleeps.
- Adjective: The black cat sleeps.
- Adverb: The cat sleeps peacefully.
- Preposition: The cat sleeps on the sofa.
- Conjunction: The cat sleeps and the dog plays.
- Interjection: Wow! The cat is huge.
